Documents that stay current.
Write specs, runbooks and guides with diagrams, tables and code right where they belong. Documents save as you type, keep their history, and the assistant can draft or tighten them for you.
Create a document
- In a project, press New Document and choose Blank document, or Import from file to bring in a PDF, Word, text or Markdown file of up to 150 MB.
- A blank document offers to Generate with AI: describe what you need and the assistant drafts it, after showing you what it will cost. Or just start typing.
- Documents sit in folders inside a project. Each gets a short id such as DOC-42, so you can find it by id from search, from Orbit, or from your own AI tools.
Writing
Switch between View, for reading without the toolbar, and Edit. The toolbar has text styles and headings, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and inline code, links, colour and highlight, font size, alignment, lists and indents.
The Insert menu
- Diagrams: a visual diagram or diagrams as code. See Diagrams.
- Table: columns you can sort and filter.
- Image: paste, drop or upload one.
- Panel: an info, warning, success or note panel to draw the eye.
- Code block: with highlighting for common languages and a copy button.
- Quote and horizontal line.
- Mention: point at a person, a document, a project or a workspace.
- Dropdown: a small choice in the text.
- Database view: a live view of a database table, right in the document.
Type @ anywhere to mention something without opening the menu. The panel on the right lists the document's Contents (every heading, to jump to), its Media, and its Data files.
Saving
Documents save themselves a couple of seconds after you stop typing. Stable Baseline also keeps a version of the document every few minutes while you work, and Ctrl S (⌘ S on a Mac) or Save now keeps one on demand. If you try to leave with something not yet saved, it asks first. If someone else changed the document meanwhile, you are told, and nothing is overwritten without your say. See Version history.
Write with AI
- Create with AI in the toolbar drafts text or a diagram from a description.
- Select some text and choose AI Edit Selection: say how it should change, optionally let it suggest diagrams, check the result, then apply it.
- Images have Edit with AI to change a picture in place.
- For bigger jobs across a document, ask Orbit.
AI work uses credits, and the app tells you what before it starts.
Editing together
Turn on collaboration mode (in beta) from the document's More menu to edit at the same time as others and see their changes as they type. It applies to everyone on the document, and adds find and replace. While it is on, you can browse and compare versions, and restore one after turning it off.
Images and data files
Paste a screenshot or drop an image in and it is uploaded with the document. For charts, add CSV, JSON, TSV or text files of up to 10 MB in the Data tab, and a chart diagram can read them.
Export
Choose Export from the More menu to download a document as a PDF or a Word file, fitted to A4 or to its content. Exports use your brand styling, or a Word template you upload with its own cover, styles, headers and footers. To export a whole folder as one file with a contents page, use the folder's menu in the sidebar.

Sharing
Documents follow their project's access. To change it for one document, open Share and permissions: give people or teams no access, read, edit or admin. Copy link gives a link that opens only for people who already have access.
See Security and access for how access to a document is decided, and what happens when it ends.
